Shelly Dimmer 2

Just played with a Shelly Dimmer 2, that I selected because it is low cost supposed to work without neutral.

The good: Wiring (without neutral) went without issue. Pairing with Shelly App without issue. The thing lights, dims and reports power consumption.

The bad: Shelly Cloud is a messy buggy app. When dimming is pushed to max the device overloads, light flashes, and connection is lost. So far I restarted by removing the light bulb — Time to read the manual.

The neutral: Home assistant Shelly integration went without issue. It reports dimmable light, overload and overheat indicator — but no power consumption.

The bad episode 2: I could not get the calibration to succeed. Light begins to flicker and device loses access to network and is stuck. One must remove power to restart things. Worse, when luminosity is pushed to high the same behavior happens. The maximum intensity must be found by trial and error. There is no way to setup a maximum brightness.

There are rumor that old firmware 1.7.2 would help. Tried that, it didnt solve my issue. Leanred the hard way that downgrading firmware requires cloud access — there is no error message that I could see if you try otherwise except that downgrade doesnt happen. Still pondering whether I will dare to use this buried in a wall.

The good episode 2: I can’t measure how much power the Shelly draws. My meter says 0.0W

These guys know hardware. They dont know software.

Things to know:

  • One may configure the device using the browser pointing directly to the device IP address. More options are available web
  • Disable Cloud access.
  • Downgrade/upgrade to any version with the Shelly Firmware Archive . Cloud must be re-enabled for upfate to work.
  • I tried the Shellyforhass integration because it purports to transmit Shelly’s power measure. It discovered some Shelly, then became stuck while setting up the integration. Removed.
  • Shelly uses Coap. One more protocol to learn :)
